Mustafa gave us a really interesting tour. He was very open and friendly, telling us stories from his childhood and life in Bosnia, which is insight you rarely get from a museum. He was kind, and took everyone on the tour back to their accommodation by request. Overall, we’d definitely reccomended this tour to anyone interested in the history of Bosnia and Sarajevo from a local perspective.

This tour focused on the 1992 war in Bosnia, it was a strange and terrible war that occurred after Tito died and Yugoslavia came apart. In a sense it was a civil war with the Serbs in Bosnia pitted against the Bosnians and the Croats, religious differences may have played a role as Sarajevo is majority Muslim and it was also clear that the the rest of the world wanted to contain the war but either did not have the will or the ability to stop it. Sarajevo was surrounded and besieged for over three years. The UN held the airport but only allowed humanitarian aid to the Bosnians in Sarajevo, they also prevented the Serbian forces from using aircraft and from using heavy artillery but Sarajevo was surrounded by mountains which allowed the Serbian forces to shell the city. The people of Sarajevo dug a 1000 meter tunnel under the airport to link the city to the small part of the surrounding countryside that they controlled. The used it to bring weapons, supplies and people in to the city. The pictures show one of the vantage points that the Serbs used to shell the city and also a grave stone in the Jewish cemetery with bullet holes. The tour was both informative and emotional for me.

To understand more about what happened in 1992 till 1995 in Sarajevo this tour is an absolute must. Our guide was a war veteran and nowadays is a peace worker. He told us so much. Thanks you for this tour. 5 stars.
